Hanoi plans 15 metro lines by 2045 at $55B cost

Hanoi aims to add five more rail routes to its existing plan for 10 lines, and to build them by 2045 at an estimated US$55 billion.

It is currently making amendments to the General Plan for the Construction of the Capital City of Hanoi and the Transportation Planning of the Capital City.

According to the existing plan for until 2030, the network will have 10 lines with a total length of 410 km, and the city will add 207 km to it.

Speaking at a meeting last Saturday city deputy chairman Duong Duc Tuan said: “Urban rail is a mass public transport system with high speed and capacity, and the backbone of urban transport infrastructure, especially for Hanoi.”

Acknowledging that rail construction has faced challenges in recent times, with only the Cat Linh – Ha Dong line and the elevated section of the Nhon – Hanoi Railway Station line currently in operation, he said the city aims to complete 10 lines by 2035 with a total length of 418 km at a cost of $37 billion.

After reviewing capital sources, it expects to raise $28 billion from other sources and obtain $8 billion from the government.
